Scary Grain-The Haunt

Hello there Halloween fashion lovers of Roblox, WoodReviewer here to take a look at Roblox’s most recent event, The Haunt, which should have finished several minutes ago if you have nothing better to do but read my reviews as soon as they are posted. Much like the previous events, this main hub for the event was developed by Twin Atlas, but unlike the pervious events this was was more of a fashion show than badge collection event, with the participating games acting more like a glorified fashion stage than an actual event to complete. This makes my job a little bit harder since I usually review the participating games in events by completing the tasks in a game and reviewing the bad wood grain along the way, but as you don’t need to complete anything in these games there isn’t any reason to visit them. However, I don’t want these games to get off scot free, so I’ve decided on a new way to look at these games: I will have 30 minutes to play them in anyway I want, but if I find any bad wood grain in a game I can stop playing it immediately.

Much like previous events, if I am unable to find bad wood grain before I finish the 30 minutes, that does not mean the game has no bad wood grain, it just means the game was able to hide it from me and it gets a pass for this review.

Oh, and just for some fun, I decided to include how long it took me to find any bad wood grain, and trust me, some of these times are really funny. And with all of that out of the way, let’s get ready for some really scary wood grain.

a dusty trip by Jandel’s Road Trip

Time Taken: 7.5 seconds

The first game I took a look at due to the fact I looked at all the games in this event in alphabetical order because that was the easiest way I had to keep tract of what games I had completed in my work in progress event doc, a dusty trip set a blistering time of 7.5 seconds for me to find bad wood grain after I spawned into the game. So where was the bad wood grain? Well, it was on the supports for a sign for a shop located right behind spawn. All it took me to find it was to load in, rotate my camera, and walk like 10 studs away. Here, the problem with the sign supports was on with the entire thing, with everything having wood grain that wraps around the wooden parts instead of going along with the parts the long way.

Adopt Me! by Uplift Games

Time Taken: 28 minutes 35 seconds

Ah yes Adopt Me!, the one game I was dreading doing since I really don’t want to play it for 30 minutes just to find nothing since in every previous look at it during events I was unable to find any bad wood grain. But wait, the time taken is 28 minutes and 35 seconds? What does that mean?

Well, it means I found some bad wood grain right before I ran out of time, in this case it was on the end grain of the planks on this floating island shop, or more precisely the lack of end grain on the end of these wooden planks.

Now, I’m sure some of you have several questions, such as why are the Pokémon balls and Pokémon everywhere. And to be honest, I have no idea. Trust me, I was looking at Adopt Me at almost 3 AM and was just as confused as you, but why this happened does not matter, all that matters is that it exists, even if it is some users’ UGC in the form of their house, but it still count.

Also for why I was playing Adopt Me at 3 AM when it was the second game I reviewed, I am very bad at time management.

Banana Eats by RyCitrus

Time Taken: I minute 15 seconds

The first game that I have never played before this event, I went into this event having no idea what Banana Eats is about, and after walking around the lobby for a minute and a quarter I still have no idea what it is about as by the terms of the contract I made up with myself I was under no obligation to play it anymore. So, what exactly did I find wrong with the lobby? This barrel has an improper orientation of the planks that make up the barrel. The planks here should be vertical, being kept from expanding outwards thanks to the metal bands around the barrel.

“But WoodReviewer, it isn’t fair to not even play a game, and the barrel shouldn’t count.”

Fine. Here is some bad wood grain on the bunkbed inside of the actual game that I found within 10 seconds of joining a round. Happy now?

Blair by Spooky Scary Games

Time Taken: 37 seconds

Another new-to-me game, I also have no idea what the actual gameplay of Blair consists of because I just spawned into the lobby and walked like 15 studs over to the store to find some bad wood grain on the doorway around the shop area. Now, I could have tried to actually played the game to try and see if there was more in the game, but this review would get way too long if I did that. Plus, I really don’t want to do that, so get over it.

Clip It! by Neura

Time Taken: 9 seconds

The most obvious game besides maybe Dress to Impress to appear in this event due to the fact the entire game is based around posing your character and taking good videos/pictures of it to post to a fictional social media network, Clip It unfortunately had a very short stint from me in this event due to the fact I was able to find multiple examples of bad wood grain that I could see from where I spawned. The easiest one to show was the bad wood grain on the back supports for these chairs, but bad wood grain is also visible on the baseboard trim around the room, and on the frame of the various boards around the room.

Color or Die by BIGWorks

Time Taken: 30 minutes

The first game that made me go the full thirty minutes I gave to every game, Color or Die impressed me by not having any improper wood grain in the first 30 minutes of gameplay that I played. Granted, all 30 minutes were spent in the same level and there appears to be at least four levels in the game, those levels don’t concern me as they are past my time limit. Until I eventually get around for a full review, good job BIGWorks.

DOORS by LSPLASH

Time Taken: 16 seconds

A return to form for games that cause me to wander a few dozen studs from spawn in the lobby in order to find bad wood grain, it took me a whole 16 seconds to find improper wood grain in Doors. Surprisingly, it wasn’t on the doors themselves, but on this small table in the main lobby. I’m positive there is more bad wood grain elsewhere in the game, like how I can almost make out some bad wood grain in the elevator that is in frame behind me, but that is outside the scope of this review.

Dragon Adventures by Sonar Studios/Twin Atlas

Time Taken: 6 minutes 39 seconds

So, I kind of cheated in my look at Dragon Adventures. For all of the other reviews I either went in blind with my looks at the games, or had a memory of where I saw bad wood grain from previous experience. With Dragon Adventures, I played for about 4 minutes, got confused by the map, and then remembered that I found bad wood grain in the game during The Classic so I looked it up and beelined the bad wood grain. Is it a bit cheap? Sure, but I already told them where the bad wood grain was before, so they can’t say that there was no expectation of what I wanted to fix. Anyway, in this case it was on the top face of this trim that has bad wood grain. Hopefully now that I pointed it out for a second time it will be fixed.

Dress To Impress by Dress to Impress Group

Time Taken: 1 minute 37 seconds, 5 seconds after round started

What was once a game that was a positive in a tsunami of games with bad wood grain, Dress to Impress has gone backwards since it impressed in The Classic. Unlike other round based games in this event where I was able to find bad wood grain in the lobby, Dress to Impress at least made me wait for a round to finish and a new round to start. However, after waiting almost a minute and a half for a new round to start, I was able to find some bad wood grain within five seconds of a new round start. In this case, it was a dresser that failed to impress.

Horse Life by Sonar Studios/Twin Atlas

Time Taken: 52 Seconds

Another entry by Sonar Studios/Twin Atlas in The Haunt, Horse Life had an above average time of 52 seconds for me to find bad wood grain in the game. Granted that is not impressive, but the bar really isn’t high here. Anyway, there were actually multiple issues here. The first is that the trim around the leaderboard here is several kinds of wrong, but that is too complicated to talk about now, so instead I’m going to focus on the wooden planks that serve as the floor for this area. The end grain on these planks should be vertical so that the plank lines match the lines on the top/bottom of the texture.

The leaderboard is all kinds of screwed up with planks, plus planks on the ground

Keys by Daybreaker

Time Taken: No

Now, I’m sure some of you are wondering what “Time Taken: No” means, along with the fact that this is not a screenshot in-game but rather a screenshot of the game page. The answer is that I was able to find bad wood grain in the thumbnail of the game, specifically with the chairs, so I didn’t even have to play the game to find the bad wood grain. Does this seem a bit cheap? Maybe. But honestly I make the rules and I decided in this case it would be funny to do, so I did it.

Murder Mystery 2 by Nikilis

Time Taken: 5 seconds

Murder Mystery 2 is a classic Roblox game that has been dominating the platform for the better part of a decade now. Unforantetly, it is starting to shows its’ age with its’ lobby full of bad wood grain. Within 5 seconds of joining the game I saw bad wood grain and was able to wander over to a spot where I was able to find bad wood grain on a fence post, a signpost, several barrels, several crates in multiple ways, and a torch.

Pet Simulator 99! by BIG Games

Time Taken: 30 Minutes

The one developer that seems reliable in their ability (now) to not have their games filled with bad wood grain, Pet Sim 99 doesn’t disappoint again with all of the wooden chests having proper wood grain. Granted, this shouldn’t be a surprise since it is an upgraded version of Pet Sim X, but sometimes seemingly small upgrades manage to screw up wood grain in games, so seeing them still be correct is a relief.

Don’t ask me how other devs manage to screw up perfectly fine wood grain while upgrading their games, Roblox devs are really bad at wood grain.

Piggy by MiniToon

Time Taken: 12 seconds

Another game I don’t have much experience with, I found this bench within 12 seconds of loading into Piggy. The issue here is that the grain on the bench should go from one end of the bench to the other, which it does do in several other benches in the game, but for whatever reason the first one I came across did not do it the correct way. It doesn’t really matter which one I came across first, though, since any would have counted against Piggy, but if it was reversed atleast it wouldn’t have taken me 12 seconds to find it.

Pressure by Urbanshade: Hadal Division

Time Taken: 1 minute 24 seconds, 15 seconds after loading finished

A new game to the Roblox event space, I was very disappointed in Pressure. Based on the screenshots and videos I saw of the game before I played it, I did not see any wood grain in the game anywhere. But after I spent more than a minute loading into the game, it only took me 15 seconds to come across some bad wood grain in the lobby. In this case, it was these wooden pallets that have bad wood grain on the stringers. Granted, this is probably due to the entire pallet being a single mesh but I don’t care about why, I just care that the wood grain is bad.

Pull a Sword by XFrozen Obbys

Time Taken: 30 Minutes

Along with BIGGames, XFrozen Obbys is one of the few devs that seems to understand how wood grain works, or at least they don’t understand it and have decided that the best way to not have any bad wood grain is just to not have any wood grain at all in their games. Either way, it works for me. The only thing that is a bit questionable about Pull a Sword this time is this sunken ship I found that has planks on the hull that aren’t offset. For those that don’t know, wooden planks are offset in floors and such so that way there isn’t one continuous, weak gap along all the planks. However, seeing as how this ship is sunk and how technically nothing is wrong with the individual planks, it does get a pass this time.

Royale High by callmehbob

Time Taken: 35 Seconds

So I genuinely have no idea what Royale High is about, what the purpose is, or why every two weeks or so everyone on Twitter seems to get really angry over it for no easily discernable reason, but what I do know is that this stool in an art area does have improper wood grain. The grain here should be vertical on the supports, not horizontal.

Scary Sushi by Evil Twin Games

Time Taken: 15 seconds

Another new game that I’ve never played before and have no idea what the game is about, Scary Sushi remains as an unknown to me as I found some bad wood grain within 15 seconds of loading into the lobby and walking up some stairs. In this case, the bad wood grain was on some wooden support beams for the main lobby building.

Slap Battles by Slap Battles

Time Taken: 0

Returning for the third time to a Roblox event, Slap Battles still has the same sign with improper wood grain by spawn that it has had for the last ~9 months. And I remember that from The Hunt and The Games, so as soon as I loaded into the game I instantly spun my camera around to look at it without even starting my timer. Is this also unfair? No, they just really need to fix the sign, it will only take like five seconds with part flip.

Survive the Killer! by Slyce Entertainment

Time Taken: 0 again

Another game that is returning from The Games and The Classic, I started clicked on the game to start loading it and then was messing around on Discord on my phone and by the time I looked up I remembered that the entire house that I spawned in was filled with bad wood grain on the window frames, shelves, door, door way, and vertical wall supports, so I never had to chance to start my timer.

The Mimic by CTStudio

Time Taken: 5 seconds

The last of our non-tower defense based games, The Mimic returns from The Hunt. However, as is a trend with most of the other games that have also returned from previous events, the developers have not fixed the bad wood grain in the game, this time in on the supports for the building holding spawn in the main lobby.

Toilet Tower Defense by Telanthric Development

Time Taken: 8 seconds

The first of the two final games in The Haunt that just happen to be tower defenses because that is how their names work out in alphabetical order is Toilet Tower Defense. Now, I have to give some credit to the devs, unlike most of the other games from previous events that had bad wood grain in their lobby and didn’t fix it, the Toilet Tower Defense devs did fix the bad wood grain in the lobby. Unforantetly, they did this by replacing the bad wood grain with some new bad wood grain on the handle for this pickaxe. A for effort, F- for execution.

Tower Defense Simulator by Paradoxum Games

Time Tale: 1 minute 10 seconds

The last game that I played in The Haunt, Tower Defense Sim did put up a decent effort in removing the bad wood grain I saw in previous events, so much so that I was unable to find any bad wood grain in the main lobby. Unforantetly for the devs, that still leaves the entire rest of the game for me to take a look at, and I found some on the houses in this medieval village level.

The Haunt by Twin Atlas

And with all the event games all done, all that leaves is the main Hub of The Haunt, made by Twin Atlas. Now I am going to be completely honest and say that for the amount of wood used in the building of the hub, a surprising amount of the wood grain in the hub mansion was correct. However, a surprising amount being correct doesn’t mean that there weren’t still several examples of it being wrong. The first example that I saw that was incorrect was on these board that were coving up some doorway in the mansion. The grain on the front of the boards that 95% of the players will see is correct, but I am one of the 5% of the players that will hug every wall looking for secrets, and the secret this time was that the grain on the top and bottom of the boards was incorrect.

The next example of bad wood grain that I saw wasn’t in the main mansion, but in the elevators mini-game. Trying to join the trend from the original The Hunt of all the signs having bad wood grain on the supports, this sign also had improper wood grain on the vertical support. What is worse is that the main sign itself has bad wood grain on the little wedge to the left side, which is vertical unlike the rest of the sign that is horizontal.

The next issue I saw wasn’t necessarily pure wood grain since it seems more like a wall paper issue, but it seems atleast tangentially related to wood grain. This wall has a hole in it that appears to be some kind of broken boards, but instead of being wood the boards have wallpaper on them. However, on the sides of the vertical pieces of wallpaper the wallpaper is horizontal for some reason, and the long horizontal piece in the center of the hole has wall paper going across it horizontally despite the fact it is behind where the main wall is. Overall what that means is this entire hole makes no sense whatsoever.

If you want to see that issue on real wooden planks, don’t worry, this hole in the floor has the same issue as above, only on wooden planks. You see, when wooden planks break they should follow the planks.

This can be a bit hard to describe, so I’m going to use pictures to make it so easy even Asimo will understand it. The picture below, which is made like the floor in The Haunt, is bad.

This floor below is good. Got it? Good.

And with that, we are almost done with the look at The Haunt. The last piece of bad wood grain I’m going to showcase is on this chair in the basement of the mansion, which has the classic bad vertical supports for the chair feet.

So, that was the look at The Haunt. How was it? Well, honestly it was terrible. Of the 22 games in The Haunt, only 3 lacked bad wood grain, with Pull A Sword being highly questionable, which means only 14% of the games had proper wood grain, compared to 17% of the games in The Hunt, 25% of the games in The Classic, and 20% of the games in The Games. Even if I was to give Adopt Me! a pass for the questionable user created level, that still only gets The Haunt up to 18% of the games having proper wood grain, and that is in addition to the main lobby being the worst one yet in terms of bad wood grain.

In addition, of the 19 games with bad wood grain in 16 of them I was able to find bad wood grain within a minute of loading into the game. This just goes to show that I am not just being overly critical of games, the bad wood grain is just super obvious. And that doesn’t even include the fact that in Keys I just had to look at the thumbnail to find the bad wood grain. Overall, it was just pathetic, and hopefully in the next event games will try just a little bit harder.

I barely played any of the games involved in the event, and I knew that I didn’t have to since this article tells me everything important that I need to know.

    Thank you WoodReviewer! 👍

huh, was clip it! in the event? I am doing my own take on reviewing the games here and I never encounter Clip It! at all, and it appears it was never mentioned anywhere in any games list for The Haunt other than this one.

It could just be a mandela effect affecting one of us, as there is an empty spot in the hub where a 23rd game could go.
