Hello there wooden plank lovers of Roblox, WoodReviewer here with the start of my 2024 Advent Calendar. I know, it is back, and if you are actually here reading this, thank you, I can see the stats and know that more people liked my post about the calendars announcement than actually read the post. This year’s calendar will be a bit different from previous years, as I know people are always wanting me to show them what exactly good wood grain is, the entire focus of the calendar this year will be to show you not just examples of proper wood grain, but descriptions of why it is proper, and to start with that we are going really simple for day 1 this year.
That’s right, day 1 is just a set of some wooden parts with proper wood grain.

Yes, I know, this is really basic, but as much as it really pains me to say after doing this for nearly a decade a vast majority of Roblox devs simply don’t understand the basics of wood grain.

Take this wooden support beam, for example. It is vertical, so it has vertical wood grain going from the bottom of the block to the top, much like a tree does.

Compare it to this wooden board. It is horizontal and on its side, but instead of being the wooden beam above shrunk down and resized, it is first rotated and then shrunk down. If you want this board to vertical then it would need to be rotated vertically, not resized up.

Other basic examples are this small wooden vertical support for finer details.

This wider wooden board.

And this round wooden beam, which is really hard to mess up since by default cylinders always have proper wood grain but I’ve seen some people manage to screw it up.

The last part included is probably the most miss-understood part and that is wooden planks. You see, wooden planks don’t follow the same rules as regular wood; what matters isn’t if the entire part is in a proper orientation, but rather each board. So while regular wooden parts can’t be super wide, wooden planks can be given that the individual planks are correct. This is a bit difficult to understand without more examples, but those will be coming in future days.

So that way day 1. Nothing fancy, but a nice, simple groundwork for future days. Hopefully as more days are completed this will make more sense, otherwise I guess I should give up hope on anyone understanding how wood grain works.

Not even gonna lie but I am actually looking forward to seeing more of this advent calendar
