WoodReviewer’s 2024 Advent Calendar Day 14

Hello there sphere lovers of Roblox, WoodReviewer here with day 14 of my 2024 Advent Calendar. Today we are continuing our look at the different part shapes on Roblox, this time with spheres. So, what gift do I have that can represent spheres?

Why a coat rack.

Is this odd? Yes. It is also one of the few ways to properly showcase a use for spheres outside of just giving out a wooden ball today? Also yes.

Like every other assets, the “vertical” wood grain on a sphere always faces the same way when inserted. However, if you learned one thing in first grade shapes it is that sphere is round so it has no vertical. So, a sphere can’t have bad wood grain? On its own, no.

However, a one of the most common uses for spheres is to serve as an endcap for a cylinder. In this usage the grain on the sphere should match up with the grain on the cylinder like below.

Not like this.

Also just one small side tangent, but MaterialFlip doesn’t work on sphere.

Instead of rotating it 90 degrees it does some random rotation that I can’t figure out the math for, and I will bug Stravant on Monday to fix it. Unless he is on Christmas break, in which case I will bug him at 9:01 AM on December 26th.

Tangent aside, most for most people this doesn’t matter since the union the sphere and cylinder together to create one part. In this case, the normal rules for wood grain apply and the sphere can basically be ignored.

These cylinders with endcaps are what I used to make the coat rack. It is a one main vertical post with some diagonal offshoots. Is it simple? Yes. It it better than me just adding cylinders to the shelf from earlier? also yes.

And that is basically everything I have to say about spheres. One more item is that if you union them you can resize the union and make some messed up wood grain, but that is true for basically everything.
