Hello there fellow metal detectors who now own the largest tank army in the world, WoodReviewer here today to look at Desert Detectors by Diggin’ Devs. Normally when I make a review the first paragraph is some odd tangent with some kind of cliffhanger before my page break when I really start tearing into a game but Desert Detectors has bad wood grain on its thumbnail so we can skip all pretenses and just go right towards “the wood grain here sucks.”

If you can’t see it, those crates have bad wood grain. They are a bit hard to see in the thumbnail but worry not, the exact same crates are in-game so I was able to get a closer look at them there. The problem with these crates is that they just have bad wood grain everywhere; the vertical, horizontal, and diagonal parts all have bad wood grain.

Moving on like 5 studs away from the crates is Temu Flamingo and this barrel that has bad wood grain. I have no idea where the trend that all barrels in Roblox games should have bad wood grain started, but over the last few months I’ve seen them everywhere. Is it probably because I’ve already done more reviews than I have all of last year? Probably. But I was still playing games last year, I was just bad at the actual writing reviews thing.

But enough of that, it is time to move on from Dollar Tree Flamingo and move onto the blacksmith. I’m not sure what the purpose of the blacksmith is as it is meant to refine objects so they sell for more money but within 5 minutes of playing the game I was literally able to find a jet fighter and a submarine faster than I was able to find 2 glass bottles to complete the introductory quest, but game balance doesn’t really matter here.

My issue with the blacksmith is with the wood grain. For starters, the stupid barrels are in here. Secondly, this massive wheel has bad wood grain. The outside rim is just terrible, and the spokes are all wrong.

Moving on through the the blacksmith, the next thing I noticed was this shelf. The main issue is with the supports for the shelf on the end, the diagonal and horizontal parts have proper wood grain on the face towards the camera, but the upper faces are incorrect on both. And the vertical brace on the back? That is just completely incorrect.

Moving just outside the blacksmith to this little porch area between it and the starting area, these vertical beams all have improper wood grain. Not much to say really, this is a fairly basic issue.

Moving on from the blacksmith completely, the next issue I noticed was these signs. Yes, signs, my mortal enemy ever since The Hunt last year. However these signs are unique in that the posts are actually correct for once. The issue is with the sign itself, which should have horizontal wood grain going across the sign, but instead has vertical grain much like the post.

It is much easier to see on this wider sign, which I had to stand away from because the proximity prompt kept blocking the entire sign.

Moving on, the next place I investigated was the saloon. As this review is already starting to get a bit long, I won’t go over ever piece of bad wood grain I found, as the actual structure of the building had several cases of bad wood grain on the vertical supports, but I will just pay a quick visit to my old friend Mr. Chair Legs. The chair legs are actually correct on one face with vertical wood grain, however the other face that has horizontal wood grain is incorrect.

The last building I am going to talk about in-town is the bank. Like the other, the structural wood grain on the outside was bad, and inside there were more issues. This table has bad wood grain on the legs, where the wood grain should be curved to follow the shape or atleast vertical with a solid core not being cut out.

Additionally, the trim inside of the bank was bad. The grain should follow the trim, going from one side to the other, not going vertically.

While that might have been all of the wood grain on the buildings inside of the town, outside of the town there was plenty more, starting with this weird clock tower thing. While it is technically in the town in terms of being on the same ground as the town, it is outside of the fence line so this it outside enough for me. The clock tower has 2 issues: First the stairs, second the railing and stair supports. The stairs are easy, the grain on the top of the step should follow the grain on the front of the step. The railings and supports are a harder issue as they are planks and appear to be one massive union/mesh. The only real way to fix this would be to separate the union/mesh to make the vertical/diagonal segments different so each part can have the wood grain controlled independently.

Is it a hassle? Yes. But will it look better than this? For sure.

Continuing outside of town, the next issue I found was with the barn. Much like the buildings in town the main support beams of the barn were incorrect, and this is highlighted with this door. The vertical support on the side should be vertical, not horizontal. This issue is extra weird because the main face of the door and diagonal sections are clearly not a single union/mesh, so this vertical piece should be easy to flip by itself.

Moving around the farm the next issue I came across was on the cross braces of this water tower right outside of the farm. The wood grain here should follow the direction of the braces, but instead it is perpendicular to the direction of the braces.

The last issue in the farm area was with the tractor shop. This issue is a bit difficult because they devs are using some custom material/texture for this shop, but it appears to be made out of wood. If it isn’t meant to be wood, I apologize, please fix the rest of the issues I’ve found. But if it is meant to be wood, this vertical support is wrong, as are the diagonal braces that comes out of it to help hold up the roof.

Continuing onwards from the farm, the last area that I came across in the game was this random shop near some train tracks. The first thing I saw was this barrel which has proper wood grain on a majority of the planks that make up the barrel. However, one of the planks on it is randomly horizontal.

Going through the rest of this building, I believe I found the answer to the barrel problem. For some reason the devs use a wooden plank texture that has horizontal and vertical segments. This is fine for floors that don’t need to be structurally sound, but on stuff like this staircase where the planks need to be structurally sound, it isn’t. If this texture or something similar was used on the barrel, that might explain the improper wood grain.

The last issue in this strange building was with the supports for the porch. Unlike the two above examples this is a pretty clear example of vertical supports having horizontal wood grain instead of the correct vertical wood grain.

And that is most of the game. Why most of the game? Well, you see I’m pretty sure that the train that travels through the map has some wood grain, such as these windows and the cab. It is hard to say if this is incorrect or not as the resolution is fairly low, but I’m pretty sure the horizontal frames for the cab are wrong.

However, the train does have more wood grain on the rest of the cars. But I had trouble reviewing the train because in every server I joined it kept doing this:
Anyway, that was most of Desert Detectors. Overall the wood grain was pretty poor, but if you couldn’t tell this based on just the thumbnail alone that I’m not sure what else to say. Add in the bonus western theme that has most of the map made out of wood and this game was destine to fail my tests, not matter how low the bar is for wood grain.
