WoodReviewer’s 2024 Advent Calendar Day 12

Hello there new CSG system lovers of Roblox, WoodReviewer here again with another union-based gift. Why am I focusing on unions so much right now? Because no one understands how they work with the old system and those that do may be confused by the new system. So, what is today’s gift?

Why a set of railing posts.

These posts were modeled out of a series of wedges, corner wedges, and regular parts that were simple stacked on top of each other. The real interesting thing here is about how they were unioned.

If you are using the old CSG system, you just have to change one of the parts so it has the correct wood grain and then select it first when unioning the entire model together.

For the new system, you need to rotate the entire model so it goes along the X axis. As a reference I added a normal brick that also has wood grain go along the X axis.

When you union it without rotating it the resulting model looks like this, which is bad.

If you rotate it like this, then the wood grain is correct. Hopefully this is finally simple enough for everyone to understand.

Then you rotate it back and you get the finished unions. I made 3 separate versions of the post, one with a hole that the railing can go straight through, another with a corner, and a third that can serve as an ending post.

Here is a better view with all 3 in action.

And that is all for today. Hopefully some of you will now understand how the new CSG system works compared to the old one. I mean most of you didn’t get the old one, so you might as well start with this one. Be sure to come back tomorrow for a gift that is less CSG focused and is more focused on building more generalized Roblox assets.

Oh, before I end this just one more small note on the CSG system change. I’m sure some of you probably are asking why you should use the new system vs the old one. For the posts above, with the new CSG system they had 444 triangles. With the old system it was 1,496. That is just a slight improvement.
