Mega Bad-The Hunt: Mega Edition

Hello there fellow hat collectors of Roblox, WoodReviewer here for The Hunt: Mega Edition, a mega editions of last year’s The Hunt event, this time with even more bad wood grain. Now that might be a bit unfair to say since this review is just getting underway, but I will say my “The_Hunt_v2_Screenshots” folder that I am using to store all the screenshots of bad wood grain for this hunt is a tad bit over a terabyte so it is safe to say it isn’t going to go well. But you know, perhaps I am being too harsh, maybe like 999 MB of those files are from like 2 games and the rest of them are just fine. We should just give every game the benefit of the doubt and have each one pass my tests on its own.

But what exactly are my tests? Well it is simple: I play each game and complete the objectives for The Hunt, and if I find bad wood grain along the way the game fails. The one caveat with this event is that due to the hidden puzzles most games have I did have to explore more of the games than I have had to in previous events so I did explore more of most games than before. Also as another disclaimer, just because I am unable to find bad wood grain during this event it does not mean a game doesn’t have any bad wood grain, it just means I couldn’t find any in this event. It is entirely there is some more bad wood grain somewhere else but due to the time constraints of the event I don’t have the time to look for it. But don’t worry about that too much, it won’t be a major issue. For now just sit back and enjoy all the bad wood grain that is on full display for this event.

SpongeBob Tower Defense by Kabby Krew

The first game in the quest for the Mega Tokens in The Hunt: Mega Edition, SpongeBob Tower Defense starts of by raising the bar and then smashing it right into the trash pile much like this steering wheel. The issue with this wheel is that the wood grain on the outer rim of the wheel does not properly have the wood grain wrap around the outside of the wheel. Additionally, some of spokes on the wheel are incorrect.

“But WoodReviewer that is a minor issue”

Well good thing I still have another almost gigabyte of bad wood grain to pull from to find a more solid example. Here, this one should be more solid. The side grain for this staircase is incorrect, with the front face having boards that are vertical while they should follow the top face and have the planks go from one side of the staircase to the other.

And if this still isn’t enough for you, hold on, there will be more from this game soon.

untitled tag game by _create

Moving on, the next game in line for Mega Token line is untitled tag game. And I do have some good news: The main area of the actual game is all good, mainly because it is all smooth plastic. So case closed, all is good, there was not a second area added specifically for the Mega Token that I need to review that is slightly more detailed. Wait, what is that? There is a secondary area that they added just for the event? And it does have wood grain in it? And they locked me in a jailcell? And they called GollyGreg a cockroach? Well, two of those three things are bad.

The issue here is that the stand that the mannequin is standing on has bad wood grain, along with the arms of the mannequin itself.

Also as an extra little bonus for those of you who think I am being too petty or that this is some type of Easter Egg so it shouldn’t count, in the opening cutscene of this event you fall through a portal, and one other thing that falls through the portal is this stupid old car that has bad wood grain on the upper support for the front windshield along with several other places that aren’t obviously visible from this angle.

Don’t worry, I’m not being petty to just untitled tag game because of this car. Someone else also made the mistake of including it and will also suffer because of it.

Pressure by Urbanshade: Hadal Division

The first game that has returned from previous events, I never actually played Pressure because when it was in the Halloween event all I had to do was join the lobby and found bad wood grain without actually having to play the game. This time I was forced to actually play it past the lobby and guess what I found in the game? The same wooden pallet with bad wood grain that I found in the lobby. The bottom here is that the stretchers going from one side to the other have vertical wood grain, when the wood grain should go along with the length of the board.

But that wasn’t the only issues. The wooden platform for these shelves are also wrong. Because the supports are in the front and the back of the shelf, the wood grain should stretch between the two supports, not go from one side to the side.

Technically because the boards are close to square I would be OK with this if the sides of the shelf had some kind of support for the wooden part of the shelves, but solely because they don’t I’m condemning them.

Chained by 1-Day

One of the few games in The Mega Hunt that I had never played nor heard of, it also goes the all smooth plastic route that untitled tag game tried to take. However unlike untitled tag game it committed to the bit and had not just all smooth plastic in the main game but also had all smooth plastic through the entirety of the custom level made for the Mega Token. Good job devs for not failing to do the bare minimum of your job correctly.

RIVALS by Nosniy Games

Moving to another game that was mostly made with almost nothing but smooth plastic, however that almost part kind of ruins the game. I know from playing the game in previous events and on my own free time that a few of the map in-game have some type of wood but everyone while playing random wanted to play the Arena map so I couldn’t find it. Additionally the devs redid the lobby since the last event so I was unable to reuse the bad wood grain I found last time. But I was able to find some bad wood grain in these crates scattered around the new lobby. The sides of the crates should have vertical wood grain, but instead it is horizontal. Additionally the pallet under the crates has bad wood grain on the top face of the deck for the pallet. The grain should go across the deck pieces connecting the spanners, but it doesn’t.

Additionally this one map that I was able to play did have some bad wood grain in this single vertical face on the edge of some large logs. I don’t know how or why this happened, probably some messed up UV, but this single face should have wood grain that goes vertical like all of the other faces on the log, not horizontal. Still, I’m just glad it’s not the only issue so I don’t seem overly petty is condemning the game for it.

Clip It! by Nuera

Returning for its second official Roblox event, third if you count its special appearance I made for it during the Halloween event, the expectations for Clip It were not high as it has a history of severely underperforming in events. I had some hope that during his many hours of chasing 1 ms optimizations for various backend processes that there might have been some hope that the wood grain would have gotten at least five minutes of work, but nope, it still sucks. Here the vertical posts on these shelves are incorrect, along with the vertical walls of the shelves in the background

But maybe that it a step too far. I mean, I didn’t even have to leave the spawn area, again, to find bad wood grain. This time it appeared on this donation board sign right behind spawn, because using bad wood grain on signs is the new hip and hot thing that the kids want these days.

If you want more examples of the bad wood grain in Clip It, one of the tasks in-game was to make a video. So naturally I made the longest video I possible could have that showed off ever example of bad wood grain I could find. Until I hit the video length limit in-game. There really was a lot of bad wood grain.

World//Zero by Twin Atlas

The first of two games in the event made by the main team of developers behind the event, I don’t have any history with World//Zero besides playing it in events. I mean I should probably do a proper review of it since I don’t hate it every second that I am playing it unlike some games in this event, but I really don’t think Twin Atlas would like that with how much bad wood grain I was able to find just playing it for the event. Take this dock area right outside the main town. Just in this one screenshot the rim on that large wheel is wrong, the spokes on the wheel are wrong, the little axle sticking out the front of the wheel is wrong, and the deck board on the pier are also wrong.

But even getting here requires more travel than I really need to find bad wood grain as this bench right next to the spawn has bad wood grain. I will give Twin Atlas some credit, though, the animation on my character that makes it look like it is decided if he should burn down the entire city or not represents the exact feeling I had while looking at all the bad wood grain here.

a dusty trip by Jandel’s Road Trip

I’m not saying that I went into a dusty trip with low expectations because in all three previous events that it was featured in I was able to find bad wood grain without leaving the spawn. No, I had low expectations because as I was browsing Twitter before the event I noticed that the teaser posted for it had bad wood grain in the teaser image. Notice the long boards going up the house that should have wood grain going from the bottom of the top of the roof.

Now I could be funny and post that exact same from a screenshot I took and writing it out now that does sound like a funny thing to do, but no, I am going to give the game some credit and not post the outside of that house. The inside of the house, however, I do consider fair game. Now, where do I begin here? The vertical rails of the ladder have bad wood grain, the diagonal beams to the side have wrong wood grain, the door is wrong, but hey, atleast the crates are correct for a change.

“Yay WoodReviewer played a dusty trip and didn’t post the lobby for a change.”

Hold up right there buddy, the wood grain in the lobby isn’t fixed. Our old friend Mr. Bad Wood Grain On The Vertical Supports Of Signs is back, with this weird triangular support beam having bad wood grain again. Additionally the same mesh and wood grain combination is used on the posts and the rail for the fence Infront of it and as a result both parts of that fence also have bad wood grain.

Infection Gunfight by 9thD Workshop

Infection Gunfight is one of the games in the event. I know there were some people hated it because people thought the event was too hard. Other people hated it because they felt the game was unbalanced and broken by the thousands of new players joining and breaking the gameplay of the game by trying to do other quests instead of playing the game. Even others hated it because the sound design was weird, and others hated the map layout. I, however, am a pro-hater. I hate it because the wood grain is trash and I was able to find bad wood grain in-game before the intro message to check your quests when you first join even disappeared, this time the culprit being this railing those rails and vertical posts both have bad wood grain.

But don’t worry, for sake of this review I am not condemning the game based on a single railing. I am condemning it based on a single railing and this ladder that I found nearby, which also had bad wood grain on both the rails and rungs. Plus there was some other examples of bad wood grain throughout this map and others but I don’t have time for that today. Soon but not today.

Basketball Legends by InfinitySports

A returning game for The Games event last year, Basketball Legends received a bit of a reprieve from me as I never actually had to play a proper round of it nor enter the locker room between rounds like I did during the last even where I managed to find the bad wood grain. Does this mean that there was no bad wood grain here? No, it means that I simply found some in the main lobby area where you were able to complete all of the quest for the game. But let’s just take a step back and start with the good for the game: The rim on this spinning rewards wheel is good, which is better than most games can do with wooden wheels. The bad? The vertical support under it was bad.

However if that was the only example of bad wood grain, the event was fun overall, and I received a bribe of a high-quality hewing axe I might be able to look past it. Unfortunately for the devs, that was not all the bad wood grain in the area. This house was riddled with bad wood grain, with the front porch railing posts, the main house posts, door frame, door, and porch decking all having bad wood grain. To look past this I need atleast a dozen axes. With one featuring Damascus steel.

Metro Life City RP by Century Creators

Apparently Metro Life City is making a return from The Hunt last year. Considering I only found out by referencing my review of The Hunt last year and in that review I state

The next game I played was Metro Life. I honestly completely forget what this game was about, besides for the fact it was another roleplaying game, and that my notes for the game said that this [bad wood grain] was right next to spawn.

So if I barely remembered the game last year during my review it is no wonder I forgot it this year. But moving onto the actual game, how was the wood grain this year? Well, it was bad again. Take this tent thing along the beach. The diagonal posts for it have bad wood grain, along with the legs on the chairs that are inside of it.

But that wasn’t the only example of bad wood grain, and considering the quests involved “go around the entire map looking for stuff” you can simply imagine that I found a bunch. But for the sake of this review the only other thing I will focus on is this… thing. I’m sure it has a name, but Googling “random outdoors building that is just a frame with no wind protection or sun protection” doesn’t bring up any results, so for now what it is doesn’t matter. What does matter is that wood grain on all the wood here is bad.

Hell’s Kitchen by ITV

As Hell’s Kitchen is a TV show that mainly revolved around a really angry guy yelling at a bunch of people because they are stupid idiots because they make simple mistakes that any professional in their field shouldn’t make, I was expecting that this game, made by professionals, wouldn’t have any simple mistakes, like using bad wood grain on the doors of the intro cutscene for the game behind the Gordon Ramsey model. However unlike Gordon Ramsey I don’t call devs stupid idiots. I just imply it.

But that small door frame wasn’t the only issue. In Gordon’s random murder basement he has under Hell’s Kitchen these random shelves have bad wood grain on their vertical posts. Why does he have a murder basement with random shelves? IDK. The devs must be idiot sandwiches.

Arsenal by ROLVe

I am going to copy the contents of my The Classic review that I made for Arsenal.

The next game saved to my images folder is Aresenal, and much like Adopt Me! they are another returning game from The Hunt and they also maintained the same wood grain status that they had during The Hunt: Bad. Well, it is a bit more complicated. You see, once again Arsenal made an entirely new event game mode for The Classic, and props to who ever made it, but it was in a nice 2008 era Roblox aesthetic and I was unable to find any bad wood grain in it while completing the challenges. However, please remember how I am doing this event: Any bad wood grain I can find while completing the challenges is fair game. So that includes in the main lobby, during gameplay, and while getting to the Classic special game modes.

“But WoodReviewer, Arsenal has a button in the main menu and that takes you directly to the event place.”

Yes. But Arsenal also has a custom loading screen system, and the fence, chairs, and tables in one of those loading screen has bad wood grain, so that counts. Sorry, but I am just following the pre-made rules I already established.

Yes, the failed this that thumbnail loading screen thing again. Should I make a new thing for this? No, because of foreshadowing. But I will add that like untitled tag game they added in the old terrible wooden car model and failed to fix the wood grain, so I will dock them for that. Is it a bit unfair

to expect them to fix this car? No, because foreshadowing.

Natural Disaster Survival by StickMasterLuke

A returning classic that I’ve featured in other events but somehow have never reviewed and I am finding that out now and it is genuinely shocking to me, one shouldn’t expect much to change in a game that has been successful for longer than the average Roblox player has been alive. But I am not normal. I do have high expectations. Ok not really high expectations, more like ground level. Anyway, those expectations are that a game shouldn’t have bad wood grain and guess what Natural Disaster Survival has? If you guess a single face of a wooden door frame have bad wood grain while every other door frame is correct you guessed correctly. Is this an Easter egg for me to find who can say.

But even if it is an Easter Egg just for me, that doesn’t explain this door on a different map that has existed since before StickMasterLuke even knew I existed that also has bad wood grain. In this case the door should be vertical, or preferably made of several smaller pieces of wood all with the correct wood grain.

Eat the World by mPhase

Another game that is entirely made out of smooth plastic, like Chained Eat The World commits to the bit and is smooth plastic throughout the entire regular token world and the entire special mega token world. So good job mPhase, I know I don’t usually give out any praise because most developers suck, but I am proud you were able to never change the texture of a default brick and that led to greatness for you.

Blade League by Wiggity.

A new game from a familiar developer with familiar mechanics, Bade League is what happens if you take Blade Ball and go “what if I make this soccer” which is stupid because field hockey already exists and is basically the same thing just with blades that are duller and more violence. Anyway, Wiggity seems to have learned their lesson from my reviews of Blade Ball in events and their lesson was they can use bad wood grain as long as they make it so it is nearly impossible to see. Which is the wrong lesson to learn as I am really good at abusing the camera to view stuff I shouldn’t, like the door way, windows, and sign on this building in the Tokyo map, so sorry, not enough. But hey, at least you don’t have some stupid sign with bad wood grain in the lobby.

Speaking of which, I wonder if the sign was removed from Blade Ball? Any guesses? If you guessed now you are correct, it is still there. Is this really far outside of the scope of this review? Maybe, but not anymore the ball can be outside of the AI’s hitbox in the event and still manage to hit it.

Car Crushers 2 by Car Crushers Community

Another classic Roblox game that is returning for this event that I really should make a proper review for, Car Crushers 2 recently had an entire map revamp that caused my usually spots for finding bad wood grain to be moved around. Did they actually remove these spots? No, they just moved them. Plus in the process they created a bunch more, like this brand new car racing stadium that is all metal and glass that has this random wooden officials stand for some reason.

But that wasn’t all that was added. A new town filled with houses, beach decorations, a new army base, and a volcano were also added. Most of this is outside the gradually increasing scope of this review, but what is important to note is that I looked at all the new stuff and there was a tone of bad wood grain in it, like in the supports for these small beach huts.

Bayside High School by Double Bandit Studios

Returning from the previous Hunt event, Bayside did nothing to help their game as the same exact bench that tripped them up last year is still here, still with bad wood grain.

But that was not the only example of bad wood grain. No, out of every game in this year’s event Bayside was probably the worse as my screenshots folder has 26 unique examples of bad wood grain for Bayside alone. That is as much as 3-4 other games combined, and unlike most other games I kind of gave up on taking more screenshots as I started to worry about using too much of my hard drive space. So good job Bayside, you cracked the code: Use enough bad wood grain and eventually I’ll stop tracking it. Your wood grain is still terrible, though.

Regretevator by The Axolotl Sun

A game that I’ve never heard of before for some reason, a few of the lead devs behind Regretevator follow me on Twitter so that made me feel a bit bad because of the fact I had never heard of it before. However once I started to play the game and noticed the bad wood grain I went from sad to angry because they follow me and yet they still have bad wood grain in their game. On such example is in the lobby, where wooden crate has bad wood grain on the top face where the handles are. This is probably due to it being a single mesh, but it still sucks.

I will give the devs some slight credit, though. They did attempt to fix this stupid car model that Roblox made, or atleast they fixed he roll cage bar above the window shield. See that, Arsenal and untitled tag game, it can be fixed. I only wish that they went a step farther and fixed the wood grain on the rail under where the door goes and on the back face where the trunk should be. Then I would have given them a pass if the only other bad wood grain in the game was just that wooden crate.

Tower Defense Simulator by Paradoxum Games

If you are a returning reader hello, do you not have any hobbies? Also you might remember the two reviews of Tower Defense Simulator I published this year, one a lost review from 2017, and one more recent review from this year. The good news if you are at Paradoxum is that the new event map is fine in terms of not having any bad wood grain. Good job. The bad news is that I had to, uh, “explore” the rest of the game looking for clues for the Mega token, and just happened to chose two maps from my recent review to search for clues. And guess what? Neither was fixed, so despite the event map being fine you are getting docked points for that. The first is on the Deserted Village map, where these merchant stalls were not fixed.

The the second map I checked was Medieval Times, where this lamp post that was featured in this map and several other maps was still left unfixed. If you want to see more, check out my recent review of Tower Defense Simulator for all the other details on these maps and more, because this review is getting a bit too long as is.

Pet Simulator 99 by BIG Games Pets

Unlike most devs on Roblox that just ignore me, Preston of BuildIntoGames actively hates me.

But unlike those other devs that ignore me Preston changed for the better and now all of his games have correct wood grain. Good job Preston, and to everyone else who laughs at me for saying hate is a bad motivator, see, it can be good.

Drive World by Twin Atlas

The second Twin Atlas game in this event, Drive World is a game is a game that I actively play in my free time. If you stalk me enough you should know this. This is good for Twin Atlas because I am an actively player in their community. This is bad for Twin Atlas because I had all the examples of bad wood grain across all the maps scoped out so unless they fixed it all before the event there was no way this would go smoothly for them. And guess what? It wasn’t all fixed. Take these pillars near the gated community. These pillars should have vertical wood grain, but instead it is horizontal.

A similar issue can be seen on this windmill near the desert area of the map. Only in addition to the vertical supports being bad, the diagonal trusses are bad.

If this feel like some minor complaints don’t worry, there is more bad wood grain in the Golden Valley map. And that doesn’t event take into account the bad wood grain in the Japan and Raceworld map. But don’t worry, you still have time to fix it before my proper review comes out. After all, you all aren’t a newly born baby and should be able to fix it.

untitled boxing game by drowningsome

As we are approaching the end of this review I am both running out of caffeine to drink and new ways to intro new games, so here is untitled boxing game, the second game in this year’s Hunt that I will get confused with all the other untitled games on Roblox soon. Anyway, the issue here is with the boxing rings in the main lobby, specifically the corner posts which have bad wood grain on them despite they fact they are cylinders and Roblox’s default cylinders should have proper wood grain by default so the devs had to actively choose to use a mesh/union for these to make them have bad wood grain.

But they wasn’t the only problem, the devs couldn’t resist the temptation of using bad wood grain on sign posts and added bad wood grain to these signs above every boxing ring. Here the bad wood grain is on the vertical supports, diagonal braces, and the upper face of the horizontal support beneath the sign. As these are all meshes they might be hard to make, but considering they spent so much time on the animations in the game I’m sure fixing this wood grain shouldn’t be too hard.

Also, as an added note the obstacle course for the Mega token would have been the top game of 2008-2010 if it existed back then, so good job on that, bad job on the wood grain.

IT GIRL by IT GIRL MAGAZINE

Another fashion game that as a fully grown adult I feel uncomfortable playing with a bunch of kids while I judge their looks, IT Girl is like Dress to Impress but different in ways that I don’t fully understand. Anyway, like Dress to Impress IT Girl has some bad wood grain in its maps, just very well hidden from normal people. The first example is this small decorative bridge outside of the map, whose railings have bad wood grain.

The second example was long the main staircase in the lobby. The planks for these stairs should go across the staircase from one side to the other, not forward and down like this.

Fisch by Fisching

The final game in The Hunt: Mega Edition, Fisch gave me plenty of possible things I could use to focus on for bad wood grain, from buildings to docks, boats to fishing poles. But I think that I am going to end this review with going back to basics: Chairs and signs. The interior of this building, for example, has bad wood grain on the chair legs and table legs of this chair and table set.

And then to end it off, this sign has bad wood grain on its sign posts. Or atleast the vertical sides for the sign. Same thing basically, only Fisch goes the extra mile by having the top and sides all have incorrect wood grain, while the front face on the bottom is correct. That is a first, and not in a good way.

So, that concludes the event. How was it overally?

Well, of the 25 game in the event, only Pet Sim 99, Chained, and Eat the World had proper wood grain, so that makes 3 out of 25, or 12%. Of all the Roblox events since the recent revamp of The Hunt last year this is the second worse showing, only ahead of the Winter Showcase at 8%. For reference, The Haunt had 18%, The Games 20%, The Classic 25%, and even last year’s Hunt had 17% of its games with proper wood grain. Granted all those events had simulators boosting their scores, 12% is still pathetic, although untitled tag game would have been good in not for their devs hubris.

But with all that being said, it leaves one question: how is the hub? Well, it is mostly fine. All the textures are custom and it appears the wooden textures were replaced, so everything is good there. The only complaint I do have is with this crystal ladder to the credits area, which is made out of trusses and breaks the crystal structure of the crystals, but I am WoodReviewer not CrystalReview, so that is out of my wheelhouse.

However, remember how I mentioned that the loading screen for Arsenal was foreshadowing? Well, The Hunt also has a loading screen, but it is the default loading screen for template places. In this case it is of the Starting Place template.

“But WoodReviewer that is too blurry to see anything.”

Yes, but it is a template place. You can view it in studio. And here it is.

And what happens if we zoom in on this door frame? Why its bad wood grain.

Yes, despite all of Twin Atlas’ hard work, they are let down by Roblox’s own template places. That is sad, so very sad. But hey, there is always the next event to improve/remember to use custom thumbnails/game icons for subplaces.

Most sounds agreeable. W review. but in eat the world the wood grain is just SMOOTH PLASTIC as you said. how again does smooth plastic count as proper wood grain?

i think it’d be cool if the next devhunt event was exclusively games that you could verify have entirely proper wood grain
