Diggy Diggy Hole-Dig The Backyard

Hello there fellow backyard hole diggers, WoodReviewer here to take a look at Dig the Backyard by brilliant_games. When I first sat Dig the Backyard I instantly was intrigued by it because as a child going outside and digging random holes in my backyard was one of my favorite hobbies. I still have fond memories of getting yelled at for taking shovels out of my garage, then getting yelled at for stealing spoons from the kitchen, and finally being told I have to ask permission to go outside when I stole a hammer. But that isn’t the reason why I was really drawn to Dig the Backyard. No, the real reason I was drawn to it was because in the thumbnail for the game has some mine bracing in its thumbnail. And guess what? The support beam for the roof of the mine had bad wood grain, so I had to take a closer look at the game.

Before I actually go to the mine, I need to check out the rest of the game. This starts with the lobby, and unlike most lobbies there is actually a decent amount to check out here, like this stalls close to spawn. These stalls have bad wood grain on the horizontal supports at the top of the stall. The wood grain here is vertical, but it should be horizontal.

And it isn’t just one stall that has this issue, but six of them.

Moving on through the lobby, the next issue I found was on this leaderboard sign, because of course the leaderboard sign has bad wood grain. The problem here is that the horizontal boards on the top and the bottom of the sign have vertical wood grain instead of horizontal grain. Technically because this is all a single union/mesh one could try to argue that this is fine because it is from one giant tree, and that could have merit.

Unfortunately no such argument could be made for the horizontal support for this “For Sale” sign on every house in the lobby. This support should have horizontal wood grain as the current vertical grain will very easily snap. The sign should also probably be horizontal rather than vertical, but it is close enough to a square while also being non-structural that is doesn’t matter enough.

Continuing on through the lobby the next thing that I noticed was this tree house that you aren’t intended to get close to. However, though the magic of breaking map limits and abusing camera view range I was able to get a closer look at it.

Here we can see some of the issues with it. The railing closest to the camera has vertical wood grain on the front face while it should have horizontal wood grain that goes along with the length of the railing. Additionally the top pieces on the door and window frames also have vertical wood grain while the grain there should be horizontal.

However that isn’t the biggest issue. The biggest issue here is that the tree house has wooden trusses. For those who don’t know, wooden trusses always have bad wood grain because of a Roblox issue and they are impossible to fix, although either due to having a custom wood texture or something these trusses are odd.

However if you have a closer look you will see that these horizontal segments of the truss are still wrong. Remember kids, never use wooden trusses. Just make them metal or something else.

With the tree house being the last major thing in the lobby, it is now time to move onto the main game, and wow, this is not much better. When you first spawn in one of the first things I did was look at the shop area with all the upgrades, cake, and computer to sell stuff. There were a bunch of issues here, with the biggest being the supports above the garage door. The horizontal beam across the door should have horizontal wood grain, and the diagonal parts of the A-frame for the roof should have wood grain that follow the diagonal direction of the frame. Additionally, the ridge beam that goes on top of the A-Frame has bad wood grain, the grain here should also follow the direction of the beam going from the door towards me.

Next up is the tables inside the garage. All of these have vertical wood grain on all sides. In this case, the side facing my camera should have horizontal wood grain so that the side grain goes along with the wood grain on the top face of the tables.

Moving over like 10 studs, the next issue is with this sign board and the wooden trim on the floor of the garage. In both of these examples the wood grain is vertical while it should be horizontal.

In fact wood grain being vertical when it should be horizontal is a major trend for the rest of the review. The same issue is present on the siding for this dog house outside the people house.

And it is also present on this tool house further away from the people and dog house. Only the tool house also has the same issue on the upper door frame.

Moving on, this chair and table set has the above issues with vertical wood grain on horizontal parts and the above issue with the tables not having proper side grain. In fact, if I didn’t know better I would say this is entirely caused by the models being meshes that were imported to Roblox, but that is probably unlikely as models usually have horizontal wood grain on vertical parts.

Unless the custom wood texture used here is rotated 90 degrees from what the normal wood texture has. That would explain the trusses above having different wood grain from normal trusses, but I can’t say for certain. Just an educated guess.

Anyway, enough with the non-game parts of the game. Moving onto the actual digging, the hole you are digging is outlined by these wooden boards that have vertical wood grain rather than the correct horizontal wood grain.

And now for the thing that inspired me to make this review, here is the mine bracing. The horizontal beam supporting the roof has bad wood grain, it should be horizontal not vertical.

Anyway, that is most of the game. If my theory about most of the bad wood grain being caused by meshes and a rotated wooden texture are true, it is going to be a decent amount of work to get this game to have proper wood grain. Still, that doesn’t excuse all of the bad wood grain here, it is just move proof that you should pay attention to your wood grain while building and not hope it all just magically fixes itself when your done.

And if my theory is wrong? Well, good luck fixing it again because it is properly screwed up.
